RE: Ice Cream Ball

I have a quart sized one from LLBean and it works great! The kids and I roll it around the camp carpet (so it doesn't get quite so messy). I scrape the sides often with a wooden spoon (as metal scratches the insides up). I also prepare the ice cream mixture ahead of time and 1-2 hours before we make ice cream I put it in the frig of the dorm frig we have in the pop-up. We always make vanilla and the kids add candies too it. Have fun!

RE: Snow load on PUP roof

I feel for ya! My pop-up has some snow and ice build up too! (I don't even know if I can get to it to swipe the stuff off with all the snow we have around here.) I'm in Maine - not from from Mt Washington.

RE: New National Park Law

Interestingly, Jeff, I have been the victim of a crime with guns involved in INDIANA (as has my husand). Luckily, we were not shot. (We lived in Indianapolis for 6 years in the 1990s.) Obviously, robbers are different than campers having responsible protection. I don't mind someone having a gun if it's legal and they're responsible at all times with them. Unfortunately, there's always a bad seed...

RE: New National Park Law

If more people carried arms while camping, wouldn't there be a rise in accidental shootings? Things happen. Some people aren't responsible. Some drink to excess. Kids get into things. I don't have any statistics or articles, but this was my first thought. And personally, I'm a Mom who camps alone with 3 kids. I wouldn't want camper neighbors with guns.

RE: Outside Showers

I don't have an outside shower, but I bought a large "outhouse" tent from somewhere (Cabelas? Camping World? Amazon?) and we use it for our porta potty. It came with a 5 gallon solar shower and we've used it once, not collecting the water from our rinse off. (I'll have to rethink that...) Most of the time (if possible) we use the camp facilities for showers, but sometimes that's really hard when I'm by myself (usually) and have 3 kids.

RE: rockwood, viking, jayco

I have a 2000 Viking Epic 1706. It's small and I would like something a bit bigger, but my TV is just a mini-van. I haven't had any real problems with it at this point. It's easy to set up and travel with and fits my little family just fine.

RE: Suggestions for PEI, Canada

Thanks a bunch! I think we're going to try Twin Shores! (I've heard nothing but good things about them, although we're not used to such a LARGE campground.) We can't wait to go!
Any more suggestions for must-sees? I'd like to the the Anne of Green Gables play and Kings Landing...and to take a day trip to Hopewell Rocks in New Brunswick. We're into lots of different things, but I try not to do many "touristy" or amusement park places.

RE: Considering a 15mo trip with family... advice?

Can we go with you?! LOL It sounds like a wonderful, incredible adventure for you and your children! I wish we were in a similar position where I could take my family on such a great travel experience!
I have been homeschooling my children for 4 years now using primarily a Charlotte Mason approach - good books, instilled habits, and nature exploration (among other things). Her approach would work well with a trip like this! (However, transiting back into PS might be harder since it's not about workbooks, teacher-directed study and being inside most of the day.)
You show love and dedication towards your children (from you posts) and are going to give them an experience of a lifetime. Your kids aren't going to miss out on anything by not going to public school. What they'll gain from exploring the US will surpass anything taught in PS!
Good luck! Will you keep a blog?? I'd love to read about your travels and share them with my kids!

RE: They say they want to camp.....

I've tried inviting friends along with us camping, but it usually doesn't work out for whatever reason.
I make a suggestion months in advance in most cases and tell them that I'll be making reservation by ______ (date). If they want to come along they'll make reservations by then too.
I don't want my kids to miss out on a fun camping adventure because others put off things to the last minute.

RE: Outside carpet

Anyone have links for the bamboo mats?
My WalMart indoor/outdoor carpet is too bulky for us...and once its wet it takes DAYS and DAYS to dry. It's annoying and not practical.
I need a carpet (about 6x12 to 7x16) that my littlest can drive his trucks and cars around on as well as help keep the camper less dirty. I want something that's LIGHTweight and dries quickly, storing compactly.
Any suggestions? Thanks!

RE: Suggestions for PEI, Canada

Thanks for the ideas! I'll take a look at those campgrounds on-line in a bit. The kids would prefer something on the beach so that'll limit my search.
And thanks about the customs stuff. I didn't even think about those potential problems! I don't plan on bringing too much down or back, but I like to have at least 1-2 days worth of meals and snacks to make it easier those first days!

Suggestions for PEI, Canada

Hi! The kids and I are considering taking a camping trip to Prince Edward Island in Canada from western Maine (about 525 miles). Has anyone been there? Suggestions on campgrounds? Places to explore? Roads driven? Thanks!

RE: Family Games

Does anyone play Bocce around the campsite? Someone got me a set for Christmas for camping...I asked for Ladder Golf or Washers. LOL
We play Dora the Explorer Candyland, Dora the Explorer Chutes and Ladders, Old Maid, Battleship (the Travel Game version), Trouble, and Flashlight tag.

RE: road tripping with a bunch of kids

I would LOVE to take the camper and head out with the kids for a cross-country camping adventure! (But, first I would need a TT and a stronger, MUCH stronger TV...and the money to buy it all! LOL)
I'm curious, but would you be going alone since your DH doesn't like camping?
Keep it simple and organized, but not TOO organized. Everyone pitches in. Takes lots of breaks to explore.

RE: Weekend Crowd

Yikes! Some of you have experienced some annoying and frustrating camping neighbors! I've been lucky I suppose that the only thing that's frustrated me is the use of a goft cart by the campground owner's YOUNG sons (under 10) last season. Since we had a large site (and a SMALL pop-up) he would cut through my site with his "foot to the metal", zooming around the back of my van by inches. I was worried he would take up my 2-year-old on one of his adventures since he wasn't an especially observant driver! (Ironically, I was stopped by his father and told that I was driving through the campground too fast...but around the corner and out of eyesight, his son in the golf cart blows past me, laughing.)

Oh, 27 nights, but I don't know how many trips. 8 maybe. I hope to start earlier this season as we were incubating chicken eggs last spring and couldn't start until June.

RE: Itchin' to go again!!

I'd love to camping now, but - sheesh - I live in Maine! We had record snowfall in December so I don't even think I could get the camper over the plowed snow "hills" right now even if a REALLY wanted too. LOL Unless spring comes early, we won't be heading out until May.

RE: Clothes Storage Ideas?

I have a TINY Viking pop-up with little storage, so I purchased a freestanding Camp Closet (found on www.casbela.com) for around $50. It's lightweight and holds all our clothing (1 adult and 3 kids), towels and toiletries for a 5 days summer trip with no problems. I keep it in the back of our Mercury van next to our box of camping "tools". The fit snuggly together and nothing moves during travel. Before going to bed at night, I chose clothing for the kids and I for the next day and put them in the camper.

RE: Howto clean and protect 7 year old canvas

I have Viking Epic 8 years old now and I bought some stuff recommended at a RV Center near my parents. There was a "package" with both cleaner (mold/mildew included) and a water resistant spray. It cleaned wondefully and a couple of days after the water proofing it poured and the rain just beaded and rolled off. Both bottles were around $15. I'd check out a local dealer who sells or maintains pop-ups. I wish I could remember the name of what I used, but I've seen it in camping supply magazines as well.
